The Asiatic Society, since its inception based on the academic agenda proposed by its founder President Sir William Jones, has been pursuing its researches and publications in the academic domain broadly categorized under History, Science and Art. As a result the History of Science in India has been a major subject of intellectual engagement. Following this tradition the Society has published quite a number of volumes on the History of Science and related subject with differential focal point. The present volume, authored by Professor Asoke Basu and Shri Saibal Datta, diligently tries to bring a point home as to the intellectual historical background of colonial Bengal where the pioneering scientists had established their own cultivated roots in the study of Science. The authors wanted to link it up with the philosophical reasoning as practised in this soil by the great visionaries in matters of logic vis- a-vis spiritual tenet for getting into the truth.
