A Structure refers to alignment of elements inside a material in general.

Broadly structures can have two broad division one Material structures are tangible, as in they can be seen like materials, building and their units, machines and their parts etc. Second Abstract structures that cannot be seen and are abstract and cannot be seen with naked eyes, viz. music, computer sciences, etc.

Based on design approaches structures are divided into building structures, architectural structures, civil engineering structures and mechanical structures.

Structural analysis essentially studies the impact of load and its impact on structures. It helps in designing structures to meet the practical requirements of present day world. The structural elements can be classified as one dimensional, two dimensional or three dimensional.

Structural elements are combined to form a structural system.

In the scenario when technology has landed in a very different paradigm in twenty first century, we need to also revisit Vastu Shastra, which is a traditional body of knowledge and still in fad today.

Vastu Shastra are essentially part of Vastu Vidya. It entails architecture, design theories, structure from ancient India and the ancient text recorded in the form of books, manuscripts, traditions, diagrams, carvings on the walls of cave and numerous other descriptions over centuries. It depicts forms, designs, layouts etc of temples, cities, citadels, granaries, individual adobes, community establishments etc.

In the ancient India architects and artist referred to as silpins were given regards and honors by the people and the society, also they were given esteemed titles by the kings of the times.

According to Tillostson some of the most important texts on vastu vidya include the mayamata, the samarangana sutradhara, rajavallabha, the vishvakarmaprakasha etc. Several other manuscripts through various parts among them depicts different aspects of Vaastu Vidya, which might even be in piece meal form, as in not essentially all being at one place.

The Brihat- samita by varamihira, Silpa Prakasa by Ramachandra Bhattaraka Kaulchara, Pancaratra Prasada Prasadhana by Daniel Smith, silpa ratnakara by narmada sankara are some among many written treatise on Vastu Shastra.
