Rivers and mountains are not just water, rock and soil. In ancient Indian literature, they are sentient creatures, having life and feelings. Some are even worshipped as gods and goddesses. They have their individual char- acters. The Ganga is a great purifying and uplifting force, whereas Malini and Tamasa are pretty little streams just gurgling along. The Himalayas are majestic and the peaks reach up to heaven whereas Mainaka is a somewhat mischievous hillock submerged in the sea.
