The cities mentioned in the epics grew up beside big rivers, such as Ayodhya beside the Sarayu, Varanasi beside the Ganga, and Mathura beside the Yamuna. The terms 'pur' or 'puri', 'nagar' or 'nagari', and even 'prastha' are Sanskrit words for city or town. Some cities like Varanasi were con- sidered holy. Others like Ayodhya and Lanka were well known for their fortification and layout. The gods had their own city of Amaravati, the rakshas their Lanka, and the yaksh their Alakapuri.
