Tirth" means "that which can save, uplift or get one over one's sins" (from tran or taran in sanskrit). A tirth is thus a holy place where people go to get over their feelings of guilt or grief. A tirth usually has an event or incident making it holy. Its grounds have been hallowed by some great sacrifice (yajna) or some great act of meditation (tapasya) or performance (kirti). Such an event or incident gives the place charisma, which heals and purifies pilgrims who pay a visit to it. From time immemorial, people have been going to tirths. Each tirth has at least one story associated with it, sometimes more.
