Va-nara is the term for monkeys, and it shows how even in ancient times they were regarded as almost men, that is, closely related to human beings. This is the way they are depicted in the Indian mythology. They are shown to be intelligent, responsible and even civilised creatures. There were two types of monkeys mentioned in the epics. Bali, Sugreev, Hanuman, Nal, Neel and so on were special ones-monkeys born with the blessings of gods who wanted to assist Vishnu in his avatar as Ram. The others are the ordinary ones-squealing, jumping lashing their tails and behaving just as monkeys do today.
