The present volume is a compact treatise on the history of British India in the 19th Century. The organisation of the chapters being thematic. the various topics discussed In the work receive a connected and comprehensive treatment. The first two chapters bring the story from the beginning of the British connection to the opening of the 19th Century. Chapter III discusses the first epoch of reforms while chapters IV and IX deal with the Afghan wars. The war with the Sikhs, Dalhousie's administration and the Mutiny receive detailed treatment in separate chapters. This is followed by a study of the twenty years after the Mutiny.

The autuor, a specialist on the Afghan and Central Asian questions, provides the most concise and coherent exposition of British policy towards these regions. The policy has been discussed at a stretch over a period of a quarter century, facilitating an overall view of the problem in all its aspects. The last two chapters are devoted to an estimate of the material progress.
