This book analyses the relationship and understanding between the two peoples, who have carried forward images and perceptions through innumerable historical phases into realities and concrete shapes. Twenty-two articles written by experts of India and Mongolia along with the texts of various agreements and declarations open up a rich storehouse of facts and information regarding the history, culture, society, economic development and recent trends in their understanding of vital issues con- fronting the contemporary world. They reveal a high-level of correspondence of their views and actions on issues and problems of international politics.

This book is a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru, who more than any one else, enriched Indo-Mongolian ties. It provides an indepth understanding of the dynamic nature of the society, economy and politics of the two partners in the field of development, social transformation, understanding and peace.

PROFESSOR R. C. SHARMA is on the faculty of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has published many books and research papers and his contribution to Indo- Mongolian studies is significant. His first book Perspectives on Mongolia was published in 1988. He is Joint- Convener of Indo-Mongolian Colloquium and the Secretary-General of Indo-Mongolian Friendship Association. He is an Executive Member of the International Association of Mongolists and is on the Editorial Board of The Mongol Studies. He has participated in many international conferences and travelled widely.

ACADEMICIAN SH. BIRA is an inter- nationally acknowledged Indologist and his contributions are widely applauded. He is a member of the Commission on Central Asian Studies of UNESCO. He is the Secretary-General of the International Association of Mongolists and the Editor of IAMS research journal The Mongol Studies. He is the Joint-Convener of the Indo- Mongolia Colloquium and has con- tributed actively in promoting closer cultural ties between the two countries.

History testifies to the fact of intimate and dynamic relationship between the peoples of Mongolia and India. The Mongols have their images about India, the land of 'Jagar and that is being enriched by the scholars and intellectuals. India is geographically distant, but has a close and intimate cultural relationship with Mongolia. Jawaharlal Nehru as the first Prime Minister of India put the century old cultural relations into a new frame of understanding and interdependence. He championed the case of Mongolian membership to the United Nations in 1960, and said, "the people of Mongolia are tranquil and her peace loving tollers are firmly striving for progress. and it seems absolutely wrong from the principle point of view not to allow her to the great organization..." He made it clear that "India has a special sentiment in regard to Mongolia, because our relations go back into the distant past of more than 1500 years." In the recent years, the two nations have entered into several agreements to foster closer economic linkages and scientific and technological interdependence. On the various planks of international politics with regards to many pertinent issues. Mongolia and India have correspondence of views and an almost identical framework of understanding.

Keeping in mind the richness and warmth of mutual understanding and the great contribution which Jawaharlal Nehru made in cementing and enriching the age-old Indo-Mongolian relations, the Second Indo- Mongolian Colloquium (October 1988) in Ulaan Bataar resolved to bring out a special commemorative volume India and Mongolia: Experiences and Interactions for the Nehru Centenary Celebrations under the joint editorship of Professor R.C. Sharma (JNU) and Academician Sh. Bira (Academy of Sciences, MPR). A detailed framework was suggested and prospective authors were identified.
