About the Author
The Rev. Dr. (habil.) James Massey, is a Member of the National Commission for Minorities. Govern ment of India. He is currently on a three-year leave of absence from his post as General Secretary/Director of the Indian Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, Delhi. He is also the Honorary General Secretary of an all India inter-religious organisation Dalit Solidarity Peoples'. Dr. Massey is the translator of the Punjabi Bible. author of Masihiata: Ika Paricaya (Punjabi). Doctrine of the Ultimate Reality in Sikh Religion and Christian Dalits in India (Hindi). Dalits in India: Religion as a Source of Bondage or Liberation with Special Reference to Christians and co-editor of the volume on Dalit Solidarity. His recent publica tions include The Movement of the Spirit and Down Trodden: The Struggle of Indian Dalits for Identity, Solidarity and Liberation, WCC Publications, Geneva, 1996 and 1997 respectively. He has also published a number of papers in academic books and journals.

Preface
"Dalits: Issues and Concerns contains nine essays. written, and presented in different times during the last few years. The main essay, which form chapter one of the present work, was originally written as a Key Note Address for the National YMCA Workshop on 'Dalit Concerns' held during August 1997. Chapter two on the term 'Dalit and five have appeared in one of my monographs entitled 'Towards Dalit Hemeneuties' (1994). The larger part of the material used in chapters three and four was also used in my post-doctoral work, which was published in 1995 under the title 'Dalits in India: Religion as a Source of Bondage or Liberation with Special Reference to Christians'. In the same way part of the material used in chapter six has been published in Switzerland, in my recent monograph under the title 'Down Trodden: The Struggle of India's Dalits for Identity. Solidarity and Liberation' (1997). Chapters seven and eight originally were written for two different seminars, one held in Brazil during 1996 and the other held in India during the same year. The basic material of these chapters also has appeared in my monograph published under the title 'Roots of Dalit History, Christianity. Theology and Spirituality' (1996). The last chapter on 'A Vision of a Dalit' of the present work in its unrevised form was also published in the National Council of Churches Review during August 1994.
