Preface
India has made great strides in agricultural production after independence and particularly since 1960s following the massive application of science and technology in the field of agriculture and its allied disciplines. The remarkable performance made during the 'Green Revolution' era has enhanced the status of India as one of the leading nations in the world so far as agricultural and economic development are concerned.

The present volume is a modest attempt with critical analyses of India's agricultural development process through highlighting its achievements in agricultural research and education, community and rural development, extension strategy formulation: increased production in cereals, horticultural crops, fisheries, livestock and dairying and also proposing future thrust and action plan in selected areas to maintain sustainable growth in 21st century.

The volume consists of six chapters; viz. (i) Agricultural Education and Research in India over the years since Independence: (ii) Agriculture and Rural Development through Community and Other Development Programmes: (iii) Development of Agriculture and Allied Areas: Means of India's Economic Growth; (iv) Extension Strategy in Technology Transfer in Agriculture; (v) Constraints in Indian Agriculture, and (vi) Indian Agriculture-Towards Sustainable Development.

Introduction
The agricultural scenario all over the world has undergone rapid and tremendous changes over the years particularly since middle of this century. From the status of agriculture being a subsistence occupation to meet the food and fibre demands of farmer and his family, farming has crucially transformed from an occupation to an agri-business. India is no exception to this phenomenon. India has made great strides in agricultural production, since 1960s following the massive application of science and technology in the field of agriculture and its allied disciplines. The remarkable performance made during the Green Revolution period marked the beginning of the process of transformation from age old traditional subsistence agriculture to a modern commercial venture or enterprise. The impact of its research and development efforts is amply reflected in the accomplishment of self-sufficiency in food grain production which rose from a modest 51 million tons in 1951 to a record production of over 198 million tons in recent years. At the same time livestock and fisheries sector have also shown considerable growth, though more to be done in these sectors.
