Preface

Agadatantra, one of the eight clinical branches of Ayurveda, is the traditional toxicology of Ayurveda. This branch focuses on understanding the effects of toxins and poisons on the human body and offers methods for diagnosis and treatment. Agadatantra encompasses both natural toxins from plants and animals and artificial poisons. The principles of Ayurvedic toxicology are deeply rooted in Ayurveda's holistic approach, considering the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit.

Agadatantra was considered the stalwart of Ayurveda, popularizing the science globally. Many explorers and travelers glorified India's snake bite management, leading to the translation of Ayurvedic scriptures into several languages and scholars visiting India to learn more.

While Ayurvedic toxicology offers valuable insights, its practices should be approached with caution and under the guidance of qualified Ayurvedic practitioners. Integrating traditional Ayurvedic principles with modern medical approaches may be considered in certain cases for a comprehensive healthcare strategy.

The new NCISM curriculum for 2nd-year BAMS students includes Agadatantra as a subject with complete clinical application of traditional and contemporary toxicology. The subject covers the application of toxicological principles and management in current diseases, emphasizing current research, holistic integration, practical utility, interdisciplinary learning, technology integration, and preventive aspects.

This comprehensive textbook on Agadatantra is the first attempt to align with the new BAMS Agadatantra curriculum. Each chapter includes examples of possible MCQs for self-evaluation. I am grateful for the support and guidance of my family, friends, and colleagues in making this endeavor possible.

After reading this book, undergraduate students will understand the basic concepts of Agadatantra, remember important points easily, learn how to write examinations, and score good marks. I hope this book becomes an indispensable tool for navigating the complexities of Agadatantra.

Foreword

It is with great pleasure that I write the foreword to this textbook of Agada Tantra, authored by our esteemed alumnus, Dr. Jyothi Sajayan. The new NCISM syllabus has created a significant demand for standard textbooks, and this book fills that gap admirably. Written in lucid language, it imparts maximum knowledge to students, making it an invaluable resource.

The textbook's unique approach, featuring flow charts and diagrams that illustrate all Agada Tantra procedures, is particularly noteworthy. This thoughtful presentation will undoubtedly benefit students who often struggle with voluminous texts.

I am confident that this outstanding work by Dr. Jyothi Sajayan will be extremely useful to both students and practitioners. May Lord Dhanvantari and Lord Manjunatheshwara Swami bless this young and emerging author with continued success.
