Ardhanārīśvara, a spectacular combination of Šiva-Pärvati, is a composite cult deity or abharana-devata in Saiva temples comprising half of Śiva on the right and half of Parvati on the left. The composite character of the image unites the masculine and feminine aspects of God explaining their oneness or gender equality like the Sivalinga which represents the phallic emblem of Siva encircled by the yonipitha of Pärvati. The deity stands for the cosmic cycle of creation in the holy togetherness of Śiva-Pārvatī symbolising birth or progeny through the union of the male and female.
