The Toda tribe is a small pastoral community, and a very ancient and unusual tribe living in the Nilgiri Hills in Southern India. They live in small hamlets called Munds, which consists of 3-7 Toda huts. The Toda huts which are of an oval, pent -shaped construction are usually 10 feet tall and spread across the slopes of the pastures. The huts are built of thin bamboo, stacked together, fastened with rattan and thatched and a wall of loose stones encloses each hut. The front and the back is usually made up of granite stones. The hut has a small entrance, about 3 feet, to protect wild animals from entering the house. Toda art form, a kind of rock mural painting decorates the front wall of Toda Huts. It looks like a thatched tent, made of bamboo. This kit will help in understanding the basis of vernacular architecture and also give an exposure to our rich traditional culture prevalent in the rural areas, in a way which is fun and interactive.
