There are many books, big and small, on seers and saints, spiritual and cultural leaders of India, but unlike these books, the present study delineates the humanistic tradition of India specifically. Here the efforts have been made to depict the tradition of humanists right from Valmiki, celebrated author of Ramayana, down to Mother Teresa, fifth Nobel Laureate of India, who dedicated her entire life to the service of the destitutes.
The humanistic thinkers numbering thirty-three included in this study suitably represent not only Ancient, Medieval and Modern ages of history; byt also multi-religious and composite character of Indian culture. The write-up on each contains four parts tributes paid to him by other scholars, brief life- sketch and achievements in the area of humanism, his thoughts on humanism in prose or verse, and references. The opening two chapters styled as 'Image of Man' and 'Humanism: Genesis and Dimensions' are of vital importance as they highlight the analytical view of the theme i.e., humanism.

Humanism is the threshold of all the religions. In whatsoever manner we may perceive and define it; but one thing is sure that its concern is welfare of human beings through legal and socially accepted means. Today every individual is busy in his or her own problems and meeting out the needs and aspiration of his own and that of the kiths and kins. Being so busy if one could do some good to other human beings-it may be termed as humanistic attitude.
