Book Description
PREFACE

It is a privilege to record the high appreciation of the veteran scholar-author Dr. N. S. Anantharangachar and the young but learned Dr. R. Ganesh who have painstakingly researched on Human Values in the Bhagavadgeeta and the Manusmruthi respectively, in lucid language for the young. Both have been connected with the Bhavan as highly reputed preceptors conducting "gurukula" in classics and Scriptures.

The treatises cover 128 selected 'shlokas' from the Bhagavatgeetha which have messages which are most relevant for contemporary times and 5 chapters (7 to 12) of Manusmruthi which deal with social justice and personal bahaviour.

The Gandhi Centre is deeply indebted to the eminent scholars for preparing these documents which will go a long way in making the second 'Book-pack for the Young' relevant and valuable.

INTRODUCTION

Manu Smrti is a great cultural, social, political and above all, a spiritual land mark in the History of Indian heritage. Smrti, the code of conduct prescribed for all to lead a happy and peaceful life within the frame work of Vedic tenets is often regarded as the vision of the seers. According to the development of the society, many smriti-s were codified in different eras and hence we have more than forty smrti-s available. However, among these, only a few works enjoy special reverence and unique recognition. Of these, the Code of Manu stands Supreme. Even in the Vedas, it is declared that the words of Manu are the elixer of life.
