We had drifted into being enslaved. That was no impossibility. Nations arose and then fell. Those who have the good luck to be rulers, they might meet the misfortune to have been enslaved. There was nothing strange in that we were enslaved, therefore. But the manner in which slavery engulfed our nation, must give us now enough reason to feel shocked at. The English statesmen even now admit that they had not defeated us at the point of the sword; nor are we convinced that we had lost our freedom in the battlefield.
Then, how was it that we were conquered? What had us down was treachery, sheer treachery. And that, too, was perpetrated by our own leaders.
That a mighty kingdom, comprising such a large area that was well-manned by a numerous army of patriotic, indomitable, warriors and abundant material for successful warfare, was put down in a matter of days, is no short of a miracle.
