The study of ‘sarcodes’ is one of the most grey areas of homoeopathic Materia Medica, which has not yet been thoroughly explored. Most of the sarcodes are not proved as per standard guidelines of Dr. Hahnemann nor majority of them been clinically verified. On scrutiny of the available literature on sarcodes, a lot of differences and contradictions are witnessed which lead to confusion in the minds of the readers, particularly in respect to their sources, preparations, clinical applicability, effective potencies & doses etc. There is no clarity whether sarcodes should be earmarked as a separate class or mentioned under the domain of ‘animal kingdom’. Moreover, the signs and symptoms of each sarcode are not documented uniformly in different homoeopathic Materia Medicas, which naturally confounds the readers.
The authors of this book have presented the profile of each sarcode in a schematic manner, focusing on its background, source, preparation, proving, sphere of action, applicable clinical conditions, characteristic features, symptomatology, suitable dose & potency, comparable medicines and experiences of the reputed clinicians with the particular sarcode. By giving detailed references of each sarcode, the authors have paved the way for verification of the information given on each sarcode, by the readers. This book will be immensely helpful to the clinicians, teachers, students as well be immensely helpful to the clinicians, teachers, students as well as researchers and facilitate the writers to explore in future the areas still unexplored.
Sarcodes are the medicines prepared from the healthy tissues or secretions, which occupy an important position in the day to day homoeopathic practice. With the increasing complexities of the disease profile, there is always scope to expand the domain of materia medica. Introduction of sarcodes in homoeopathic literature has solved the problem to some extent, but the information about the sarcodes given in such literature is scanty. The endocrine glands and hormones from which many of the sarcodes are prepared would probably have a great role in the treatment of many diseases.
A deficiency with sarcodes that I perceive which has prevented their wider use has been the absence of classical proving or human experiments. Some of the sarcodes have had sketchy clinical proving but others have been used only on the basis of their physiological role of producing effects in health and disease. Very often they are used on their physiological effects and not on the similia principle. Besides, very few of the sarcodes have been documented in the standard homoeopathic materia medicas. Therefore, this book should fill up the vacuum and add to the homoeopathic armamentarium. However, it is suggested that the sarcodes should be proved so that their full potential is known and they are used on the homoeopathic similia principle and not on the basis of physiological effects.
The authors of this book on sarcodes have made a serious attempt not only to collect as many sarcodes as possible from different authentic sources, but also they have tried to incorporate maximum symptoms under certain polychrest sarcodes. I have personally gained much by going through the monographs as I was not aware of some of the sarcodes which have been included in this book. This will help the practitioners to find out the similimum in some of the intractable chronic disease conditions where the choice of remedy becomes a difficult task.
With the changing patterns of diseases in the present era, the emergence of new health problems emphasize the need for forward-looking approaches in health planning and management. Multiple factors like changing lifestyles and living standards, demographic factors, urbanization, industrialization, medical interventions, transmissible genetic defects and the wide spread effects of science and technology on ecology have played their role in contributing towards the changing health scenario. This requires sufficient in-depth knowledge of clinical applicability of various medicines, on the part of the medical practitioners to deal with these health problems successfully. This book is presented to the homoeopathic profession, embodying the resume of the sarcodes, the neglected medicines by the profession, showing their diverse fields of action. Many reliable homoeopathic literature have been referred in order to portray authentic information about the sarcodes.
