The following paragraphs are written from the perspective of some of the siblings of the late Dr KL Chowdhury (KLC). This is about his life and evolution as a writer, a beloved doctor and a community activist.] We were a family of six siblings. The first two decades of our lives in the Kashmir valley were spent together in our ancestral house at Rajveri Kadal in the old city of Srinagar. We grew up as one of only two Kashmiri Pandit families in a sprawling neighborhood of Kashmiri Muslims. It was a great childhood in a joint family. We lived within walking distance of Hari Parbat, a hill that houses the famous temple of Goddess Sharika and an important religious site for Pandits (Hindus) of the valley. Among the neighbors, there was communal harmony and mutual respect. At the time it was safe even for a lone Pandit woman to take morning walks to the temple through streets that were entirely Muslim. Other than following the routine religious rituals on birth- days and Hindu festivals, the focus was less on religious zeal and more on modern education and science and career goals. In that golden period, we imbibed basic cultural values which have guided us through our life journeys.
