Book Description
About the Book

Distinguishing between "good" and "bad" is an important tool for children to help them cope with their changing world. Hitopadesh: Tales of Worldly Wisdom outlines the morals behind the chain of events in a story in a manner that children can understand easily. Popular for centuries, it remains an idea companion for children at home and in school libraries.

Preface

Hitopadesh is one of the best examples of Fable Literature-a story that contains a moral. Fables are the best way to understand what happens if you do something, and whether it is good or bad-a moral lesson. Hitopadesh in Sanskrit means good or beneficial (hit) and advice (updesh). For children, distinguishing between 'good' and 'bad' is an important tool to help them cope with their changing world. Short in length, the fable outlines the moral behind a chain of events that children can absorb easily.

Many of the fables that became famous later on, like the Aesop's Fables and others, were probably taken from this Indian source. This is the feeling one gets as one reads the Hitopadesh. As people travelled, stories spread and changed their form, but the message remained the same.
