Book Description

Preface

The present work attempts to give a brief account of the history and growth of Muslim education in Surat (Gujarat) and its impact on them under the British rule.

Education is considered to be a powerful instrument of social change, and how the Muslims of Surat responded to it under the British rule is discussed in this work with relevant facts and figures. It highlights the Muslim attitude to education and their response, efforts and difficulties and also the Post-Independence educational trends among them.

Though there are quite a few studies available on the various aspects of Muslim society of India, the fact remains that at both the all-India and the regional levels much is not known about the social, economic, educational, political and cultural problems of the Muslims of India. There is, therefore, the need to study these and other aspects of the Muslim society.

I am immensely grateful to the late Prof. S.C. Misra, Ex-Head, Department of History, M.S. University of Baroda, who inspired me to study the Muslim society quite closely. The late Prof. L.P. Desai, a renowned sociologist, helped me in a big measure and I owe much to him.

I am very much thankful to Dr. (Mrs.) Gita Bajpai, Head and Coordinator, Department of History, M.S. University of Baroda, for taking keen interest and providing me all necessary help in my work under the DSA programme. My thanks are also due to Prof. S.K. Desai, Ex-Head, Department of History, M.S. University of Baroda, for his sustained interest and guidance in my work.

I thank Shri P.N. Shrivastav, Press Manager of the M.S. University Press, and his staff for the printing of this monograph.

I trust this smali monograph will be found useful by scholars engaged and interested in social science researches/studies, in particular, and the readers, in general. I shall feel satisfied if this work arouses interest and curiosity for such studies in the future.
