About the Book History of India, the monumental four- volume work, offers an elaborate and chronological account of Indian history from the earliest times to the present period. It endeavors to give, without prolixity, a statement of the relevant facts at present available, both in regard to the origin of the more important Indian races, and in regard to their progress before they came under the unifying processes of modern administration. It also includes the brief relation of the unprecedented series of events under which a remote commercial people have begun to weld those races into a single nationality.

This volume covers Indian history from 1773 A.D. to the present. It also offers a detailed and graphic account of the British period of Indian history. The focus on the Revolt of 1857, the development of the constitutional framework from 1773 to 1950 and the National Movement will prove to be of immense interest to the readers and students of Indian history. The history of India since independence has also been discussed in this volume. Some of the other important topics covered in this volume include the Indian movements for reform and social change, the impact of the British paramountcy on Indian economy and the legacy that it has left.

About the Author Prof. N. Jayapalan, M.A. (History and Political Science), M.Phil. (History), Ph.D. (History), has retired from Government Arts College (Autonomous), Karur, Tamil Nadu. Preface It gives me immense pleasure to place Volume III and IV of these books in the hands of the readers. The book is quite comprehensive and covers the entire syllabus prescribed by the several Universities. I have narrated all the events chronologically from the beginning to the end i.e., 1773 to the present day. I have taken due care to ensure authenticity of facts. An attempt has been made to present the subject matter as interesting and informative as possible. Each chapter has been given dispassionate and objective treatment.
