The Ujjainia chiefs of Bhojpur by virtue of their unbo- unded chivalry, indomitable nature and heroic exploits occupied an important place in the political history of medieval Bihar. They rendered valuable services towards extension and consolidation of the Mughal rule in the Eastern Provinces. But if provoked to rebellion for some reason or other, they proved a serious menace to the Mughal Imperial authority in Bihar. Besides, they also contributed to the enrichment of cultural life of medieval Bihar especially of Bhojpur region by patronising art, literature and architecture. Notwithstanding their achievements in political and cultural fields, they have not received due consideration at the hands of modern scholars of Indian History. However, my esteemed teacher Prof. S. H. Askari and my late lamented friend Dr. B. P. Ambasthya, Senior Research Fellow and Assistant Director, K. P. Jayaswal Research Institute, Patna, did contribute articles giving their own interpretation of an important source-material dealing with the advent of Paramar (Ujjainia) Rajputs to Bhojpur and also their earlier exploits. These were published in the Journal of Bihar Research Society in 1955 and 1961 respectively. But a systematic and authentic history of Bhojpur was a cry in wilderness.
