Historical Importance of Vachana Sahitya is a book which gives brief information about Vachana Sahitya. Vachana writing has become a literary style in Kannada throughout the centuries since the 12th century which was then pioneered by Basaveshwara and other Shivasharanas. The Vachanas represent a continuous tradition of original writing, spanning nine centuries from the time of Basaveshwara to the present day. The liberty, equality, brotherhood and humanity the message Vachanakaras are not confined to any particular region or person but all men and women of nations of the world. The need of the hour is to practice and profess the ideas of Vachanakaras in these days of burning issues like poverty, unemployment, inequality etc. On the whole Vachana literature has enriched the Kannada language. Simple, chaste, sincere words coming from the innermost heart certainly captured the hearts of the people of those days and today also.
The Vachanas teaches man to live in society gracefully and balance the worldly and spiritual life equally. Welfare of the all is the main objective of all the Vachanakaras of 12th century to 21st century.

It gives me great pleasure to write a foreword to Dr. Nalini Waghmare's book on Historical Importance of Vachana Sahitya. The result of much research on the topic, this book makes a valuable addition to the corpus of information on the great Bhakti reformer and poet, Basaveshwara.
Dr. Nalini Waghmare has, through her study of the vachana-shastra, made a praiseworthy attempt to bring to light aspects of the poetry itself, as well as the historical context in which such writing emerged. She has thus highlighted not just the poetry, but its significance in the society of the time and later, for she has pointed out the continued social relevance of the aspects that the vachanakaras talked and wrote about.
She has thus brought to light the range of Basaveshwara's work as a reformer and as a poet. Equally importantly, she has taken care to point out that his was not a lone voice, but one which echoes among the people, and found others who shared the same voice and the same literary styles, and who then, through literature, poetry and devotion, pointed out ways to a better life.
The fact that I am able to write a foreword for a book on the subject, and by one who was my student, gives me even greater pleasure. I feel sure that this book will be of much interest to a variety of people.
