The region of Bidar was a very important one through much of the medieval period in Indian history. Not only was it the capital for a very long time, it was also the seat of a great deal of learning, and thus drew many people to it. Even today, the water systems of the fort of Bidar are considered a wonderful feat of engineering. The district, with its focus on knowledge, not surprisingly drew scholars of many kinds, and is therefore also linked to the Virashaiva religion and its mathas.
This area also became famous for its artisanal tradition, and the bidri-ware is world famous till today. The painstaking efforts of the craftsmen to create something that lasts for many hundreds of years is indeed noteworthy.
I am glad that Dr. Nalini Waghmare has chosen to highlight the historical importance of this region, so as to bring to light its many dimensions through this detailed study.
