N. Sundara Rajan, one of the senior – most astrologers of India, is a well known writer, speaker and astrology programmer. A Mathematics (with astronomy) graduate from the Madars University, the septuagenarian has more than five decades of research experience in Vedic Hindu astrology. A retired Customs officer, he has published books on astrology and contributed articles to The Astrological Magazine and other journals in India and abroad, besides giving lectures at various forums. The author has been instrumental in introducing computerized horoscopes in India and has even developed his own software on Vedic astrology.
The science of astrology is a study of the effects of the planets and their interactions with each other and with the sun as their axis. It has particular reference to our planet earth and on abstract and living beings on earth, including humans, birds, animals, reptiles, etc. and other objects such as mountains, oceans, trees, plants, etc. and also on phenomena like eclipses, New Moon, Full Moon, etc.
Ancient Hindu astrology recognizes seven planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Rahu and Ketu. The last two are not actually planets, but the Moon’s Nodes.
Western astrology recognizes three more planets – Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (which astronomers have now downgraded as a non – planet). Recent discoveries include Sedna and the asteroids, but the study of the effects of these planets on earth is still ongoing research.
Time is the basis for all astrological studies, and every moment of time has its own astrological significance, based on the positions of the planets in a particular place on earth.
All the planets of our solar system, including earth, revolve around the Sun which is the focus point. All these planets also rotate around their own axis; they have their masses, gravitational fields, etc. and in their interactions, they exert considerable influence on each other. The rise and set of Sun and Moon, etc., which is caused by earth’s rotation on its own axis relative to Sun, Moon, etc. is also important. As we know, the timings of sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, etc. (other planets also have this phenomena) are diverse in different places on earth depending on the geographical longitude and latitude of the place.
We say the Sun rises in the east, as it appears to us in our locality. Along with the Sun, a portion of the sky also rises and travels westward with Sun, till the Sun sets and goes below the horizon (which is night for that locality) and again rises in the east the next morning. Thus the Sun and the portion of the sky that rose with it, completes a circle in a 24 – hour period. Following the westward motion of the Sun, other portions of the sky also ‘rises’ in the east and moves west in a cycle of 24 hours.
Thus, at every moment of time, some point of the heavens is rising or ‘ascending’ in the east and then travels west. So for every moment of time, there is an Ascendant or Lagna for that particular longitude and latitude. At that moment of time, the planets are in different parts of the sky or heavens. The combined map of both the ascendant and the planetary positions constitute the horoscope. For that moment of time, the position of the planets will be the same for all places on earth, but the Ascendant will vary according to the longitude and latitude of the place.
Astrology and Astronomy
The mathematics and calculations of the various data connected with space, solar system, planets, asteroids etc. is astronomy.
Astrology is the interpretation of the horoscope, which is based on astronomical calculations of the positions of the planets, ascendant and other astronomical data.
The interpretation of the horoscope, known as astrology, is based on observations made thousands of years ago on humans and other living and non – living objects, relative to the movements and other characteristics of the planets in the sky. It is based on a law of precedents. When similar patterns repeat, the effects too are repeated.
