Book Description
About the Book
In Himalaya Landscape with Trees, seasoned mountaineer and photographer Pronab Kumar Dey, presents a lyrical visual account of a vast stretch of the Himalayas. The viewer finds a wide range of tall topography meshed with an equally sprawling variety of amazing flora. Always a dandy observer, Pronab's study covers the topographical essence of the landscape first through its elements- soil, rocks and habitat. Later he zooms in on the second protagonist - trees. His flagrantly colored, misty, musical plates begin with a view from a World Heritage Train 'window to the world' while traveling from Kalka to Shimla. Soon after, anaclitic with the Himalayan landscape, trees begin emerge in them. Trees remain postered in a plethora of locations, seen from many viewpoints, in a rich assortment of wild diversity. From Griffithiana found in Encholi village in Pithoraghar to the Himalayan Larch tree, Silver Birch, Oaks, Pines and Junipers of a wide collection; to Deodar, and Pine forests (in Binsar), Jackfruit, Abies Pindrow, Apricot and Red Silk cotton trees; to Rhododendron facades in Pandim Peak; Chestnut, Chinnar, Poplars and Dupees, Pronab's plates offer a contemplative calm viewers will mediate on.

Preface
In the analyses of pictorial or visual arts a dichotomy often buoys up about the modes of onlooking - the point-of- view (POV) versus viewpoint (VP). These become particularly relevant and fascinating when the discussion turns to photographic or cinematic arts. The point-of-view or POV can be about the onlooker or artist's choice of subject, approach to life: singular or collective and the compulsion to message (either connotatively or denotatively or both, which Roland Barthes famously elucidates in some of his books). The viewpoint or VP tells on the physical position of the viewer, angle of attacking the topic and can thus be an expression of the artist's temperament. While the VP can aid the POV, it can also be fiercely disparate.
