Swami Vishnudevananda (1927- 1993) was a pioneer of bringing the message and practice of Yoga beyond the shores of India. For over thirty years he travelled far and wide to teach an integrated approach to the main paths of yoga. Swami Vishnudevananda founded the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres with many branches both in the West and in India. The lectures which are presented in this book are focusing on Hatha Yoga in its larger context. The recordings were taken in many countries, in public halls, during group meditations, in Teachers' Training Courses and symposiums.
I went to my Master Swami Sivananda when I was 17 years old. I had not learned yoga from anybody. My Master Sivananda did not teach me, he just touched me and opened my subconscious mind. From my past life all the yogic knowledge came back to me. Of course, The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga was written in this life. But none of these things was ever taught to me by my Master nor any being here on the earth. My Master opened my memory of past lives." These are Swami Vishnudevananda's own words about his yogic training in the Ashram of Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh in the Himalayas. In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent his young disciple to take yoga beyond the shores of India: "Go to the West. People are waiting." For over three decades, Swami Vishnudevananda traveled far and wide. He founded the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, with many branches both in the West and in India. The lectures which are presented in this book were recorded in many countries, in public halls, during group meditations (satsangs), in Teachers' Training Courses and symposia. These inspiring live teachings expand the practical aspects of hatha yoga which Swami Vishnudevananda himself taught to people all over the world. A comprehensive introduction to hatha yoga and meditation can be found in The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras, the two best-selling books written by Swami Vishnudevananda. The depth of the yogic teachings lies in the fact that they can be experienced through one's own practice. Especially the graduates of the Sivananda Yoga Teachers' Training Course will find this reading easy and uplifting, as it relates very closely to their training experience.
