Haryana has been unfortunate, among other things, in matter of writing and research. Haryana has as Lmany as half a dozen universities. However, none of them has organised any research project that could produce seminal work on the state. The tradition of reading, writing and debating issues has been very weak in the state. And its rich heritage, its past with many ups and downs and its present replete with many complex problems have suffered incalculable neglect. Even scholars from outside have not paid much attention to it.
I have been commenting on Haryana in various newspapers, journals and reading papers in seminars for the last about three decades. Some friends have suggested, time and again, that I should produce a book on Haryana focusing on the current problems in the light of its past baggage. The present book is a response to this. The book is not a history of Haryana in its chronological order. It is an attempt to understand the present Haryana in the light of its past. Time is a continuum and we divide it in three segments for our convenience.
The opening chapter deals with Haryana's past going back to the times of Indus valley and the Vedic civilizations to the medieval times, the British period, up to the present times. It is a rapid survey.
