Book Description
About The Book

Dr. Harivallabha Bhayani (1917-2001) was a world renowned scholar of the Gujarati literature of the Middle Ages in particular, a linguist and grammarian. He carved out for himself a place of a very great honour as a scholar and a critic well versed in both the Indian and the Western literary criticism. He was a very well known scholar of Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsa and an erudite veteran of the Gujarati language and literature of the medieval times in India and abroad. His contribution to the history of the Gujarati language and literature is sevenfold, as a researcher and editor of Gujarati medieval literature, as a linguist having contributed considerably to linguistics and grammar, as a translator of Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsa poems, as a creative artist of thoughtful, culturally oriented and autobiographical essays, and as an editor of various magazines and journals.
Dr Bhayani was recipient of many coveted awards such as Ranjitram Gold Medal, Gaurav Puraskar of Gujarati Sahitya Academy, Prakrit Jnana Bharati Award, Narmad Gold Medal, Narsimha Award, Acharya Hemachandra Suri Gold Award etc. Taking into consideration his overall contribution, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London conferred on him Fellowship in 1996 and Honorary D.Litt. by the Saurashtra University, Rajkot in 1997.
