About the Author

An internationally renowned modern artist of India, Shri K.C Aryan ranks amongst the foremost pioneers of Indian folk and tribal art. His appreciation for the aesthetic merit of the rural and tribal artistic heritage was inborn. He was the first to raise his voice and concern for this precious, but completely neglected artistic heritage. No one with the sole exception of Shri Aryan, realised that the illiterate and unknown craftsmen had nurtured our artistic and cultural heritage and preserved it from getting lost. More than 70 years ago, he began collecting these art objects primarily with a view. to preserve them for posterity and to prevent them from getting irretrievably lost. The scope of his collection grew very vast, going beyond the geographical limits of north-western India, and encompassing the entire country, including areas that formed part of India before 1947. The collection was built painstakingly with exceptional perseverence and patience, inspite of Shri Aryan's modest means. Eventually, he displayed his collection in his own residence and named it 'Home of Folk Art: Museum of Folk, Tribal and Neglected Art. Today, the quality and scope of collection in this extraordinary museum give us an insight into the aesthetic vision and dauntless determination of Shri Aryan.

Preface

In India there is no town or village without a temple or altar consecrated to the most favourite and popular God Hanuman. Hanuman takes his place in our collective consciousness as a divine figure who is also within our reach. He inspires us with his physical strength, humility, and loyalty. Our Divine Simian represents all these and yet a lot more, because he reveals only a few traits of his multi-faceted personality to his devotees The exhibition, "Hanuman: The Divine Simian", is our humble attempt to unveil the God in his completeness through our rich heritage of visual culture, both traditional and folk.
This first of its kind exhibition is a tribute to the life time of dedication of my father, late Shri KC Aryan (1919-2002), renowned modern artist and the visionary Founder of Home of Folk Art. With his personal collection of the finest of Indian folk and tribal art, he had established this museum in 1984. He was deeply committed to preserving these artefacts for posterity, to prevent them from getting neglected and irretrievably lost. With a vast collection spanning across space and time, some dating back to 12th century. today the 'Home of Folk Art' is revered as an institution. providing an invaluable wealth of knowledge of our rich visual heritage.
