This book is intended to be a guide to help the solve the day to day problems in running a family. We are grateful to Mr T.N.C. Veeraragahavan, who pointed out the need for a comprehensive book on the subject of household hints, and has been the motivating factor behind this book.

We have included topics which are pertinent to the task of managing a household in the present day context. To name a few, travel, savings, maintenance of domestic appliances safety and of course the kitchen. Since this is a book of practicol applications, we have emphasised brevity and simplicity of language rather than literary elegance. As this is essentially a book of hints, recipes have been excluded except where necessary.

The increasing trend of urbanisation has meant that many of the home cures that were prevalent just a few generations back are now being forgotten. In consolidating the chapters on Home Cures and Care of Babies, we drew upon the experience of three grand old ladies: Smt. Padmasini Krishnaswami, Smt. Jayalakshmi Krishnaswami and Smt. Kamala Ramaratnam.

The scope of this book extends to the environment outside the home also.Thus we have dealt with social service, real estate and consumer protection.We are grateful to Mr. T.N.C. Varahan, Notary Public, legal expert on real estate,and Mr. K.R. Murali, Advocate, who specialises in consumer rights protection.

A major aspect in writing this book has been collecting facts and then grouping them together into related subjects, using a personal computer. We are especially grateful to Mr. R. Saranyan, Mr. T.N.C. Venkata Rangan and Ms. V.V. Priya who initiated us into the world of computers and who have also been our cheer leaders throughout.
