Foreward

For achieving the Health for All by 2000 A.D. it is, important to recognise the patterns of diseases, and their distribution and understand the determinants of health and disease. Science of Epidemiology not only enables us to understand the above phenomenon but also helps to apply the principle of Prevention and Promotion of health at different levels of natural history of diseases. Inspite of the fact that understanding the epidemiology of small-pox helped us to develop appropriate technique for its global eradication yet the discipline of epidemiology remains neglected. It has not found sufficient space in curriculum and in teaching programme of medical undergraudates and various health professionals. Likewise the application of epidemiological knowledge in formulating various health programmes is conspicuously absent. Members of health profession find themselves unprepared to implement various health programmes successfully.

Dr. L. Ramachandran's book entitled "Handbook of Epidemiology for Personnel of Primary Health Centres" is a very timely and useful venture. It provides resource material totally in Indian context. It will help them to perceive the sequential development of various health programmes. reasons for failure and success and guide them to orientate their work in more meaningful way.

This is an original study based on original sources including oral traditions of the people before the coming of Christianity among them. For any general readers and research scholars who are involved in tribal studies and culture, the book is a must read book.

Preface

It has been repeatedly pointed out that the preparation of Medical Graduates is not adequate for undertaking the stewardship of Primary Health Centre. The Reorientation of Medical Education (ROME) Scheme has not been implemented effectively yet. There is a great need to strengthen the capability of under graduates for assuming the managerial responsibilities. Moreover, there is also a need for their orientation towards the epidemiological approach for understanding the health problems in the community and taking necessary timely action with a perspective of total health care. Though the subject of epidemiology is included in the under graduate syllabus, the teaching has not been related from the practical stand point to the working of the Primary Health Centre and delivery of health care.
