About the Author:
He is and eminent scientist in the field of horticulture, retired as Project Coordinator, All India Coordinated Research Project on floriculture, Indian Council Of Agricultural Research. He obtained his M. Sc. In Horticulture with first class and first rank from Kalyani University and Ph. D. in horticulture from Calcutta University. He is also a diploma holder in Business Management and Industrial Administration, United Nations Studies and Landscape Architecture.
He has 38 years research, teaching, management, developmental and administrative experience in private organizations, Indian Botanic Gardens, Botanical Survey of India, state Agricultural Universities and ICAR Institutes. He was Head of the Division of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, Indian Institute of Horticulture Research, Banglore. He has also served as Professor of Horticulture and Professor-in-Charge, North Bengal Campus, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Cooch-Behar, West Bengal.
He has visited several foreign countries. He has published about 400 research papers and popular scientific articles in journals of national and international repute. He is the author of seven books among which Advanced Commercial Floriculture, Handbook of Medicinal Plants and Medicinal Herbs and Flowers have been widely acclaimed and well received.

Since antiquity aromatic plants have been used as flavour for food and drinks, for imparting fragrance to human body for beautification of homes and gardens for religious rites, as incense and insect repellent in cosmetics and personal adornment and in medicine. Flavours and fragrance have now become every day necessities and between naturally derived aromatic material and synthetics the two are supplementary and must go hand in hand. There is however renewed preference for natural essential oils. India is a large consumer of different kinds of essential oils.
Although essential oils are produced in large quantities this is unable to meet the internal demands for several different types of essential oils, which need to be imported. Major oils being imported in India are geraniym, patchouli, lavender, and lemon, orange oils. Large quantities of oleoresins and resenoides of balsam variety are also imported in the country for use in agarbattis and oleoresins and resenoides are imported.

Ours is a vast country where wide variation in climate, soil, altitude and latitude is a available. Nature has bestowed on us a very rich botanical wealth and a large number of diverse types of plants grow wild in different parts of the country. Concerted and planned efforts towards utilization of these natural resources will bring down imports and boost the exports of many of the essential oils. An attempt has been made to organize this book in such a way that it will be useful to everyone interested in the world of plants. Particularly those increasing number of people who are concerned with aromatic plants. Many of these valuable and useful groups of plants are threatened with extinction because of over-exploitation and habitat destruction. Authentic plant spices, which are threatened with extinction, are to be preserved.
My endeavour here is to make people aware of the potential of aromatic plants from all angles and to explore possibilities to develop new vistas for perfumery based raw material. There is a need to identify the natural plant wealth and commercially viable species in each agro climatic zone, to introduce new commercial crops grown and utilized abroad, promote industries to produce essential oils standardize agro techniques for cultivation and production of these plants particularly in forests, waste lands and orchards as an additional income generating activity; and also to strengthen the research and development activity for evolving new aromatic chemicals and their production technology.
In this book more than 400 genera are discussed covering nearly 1,100 species. Almost all commercially important aromatic plants cultivated in different parts of the world have found a place in this publication. Plants with fragrant flowers or plant parts commonly grown in gardens or found in nature, which have not been exploited for essential oil or perfumery quality, are also mentioned. An integrated and comprehensive account of all related aspects of the subject such as nomenclature, description, distribution, cultivation, processing, physical and chemical properties of large selection of plants have been incorporated. I hope that the information furnished in this book will make it easier to identify the aromatic plant and make their growing more thorough and satisfying.
