Book Description
Preface
It is a pleasant surprise for me to see a book on the Gypsy Language in Hindi entitled Jipsi-bhasa written by Professor Bhagirathi Prasad Tripathi ‘Vanish Shastri', Director of Research Institute, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi.

It is a highly neglected field in the Indian scholarly world, but the Gypsy Language and the related problems are of considerable importance for Indo-Aryan Lingui-stics. It is now beyond controversy that they moved from India to the West. As far as their time of departure from India is concerned, the most acceptable date, as I feel, is the date accepted by Turner (vide his paper: "The Position of Romani in Indo-Aryan", published in collected papers, p. 251-290) where he has stated that 2nd or 3rd century B: C. is the probable date for their migration.

The Gypsy-speaking Indo-Aryans have spread over a large part of the world. This suggests that it was possible in early ages also for people to move outside India and it was also possible for them to spread over several areas. This has been discussed by me in detail in a recent book (Aryan Problem A, Linguistic App-roach, Unpublished).

A thorough scrutiny of the Gypsy Language is therefore highly essential and I congratulate Prof. Tripathi for opening a golden gate for the same. He has given full details of the history of Gypsy studied, phonology and morphology of the Gypsy Language and has made the book highly useful for Indian scholars. I hope this book will be highly hailed by Indian scholarship.
