Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a great spiritual light for the mankind. He spread the message of true religion and true devotion to almighty. He did not believe in a life of renunciation. He had warned the world that men of god should not behave like social parasites. Earning one's living and sharing its fruits with the world are essential responsibilities of true followers of religion. Guru Nanak Dev Ji spoke for spiritualism combined with social responsibility. His sacred compositions are full of such commentaries on his contemporary times. He exposed religious hypocrisy of priestly class and corrupt behavior of state officials.

This book is a brief outline of social thought of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. His life, travels and sacred Bani is a great source of such thoughts. Written in a lucid style, this book is useful reading for lay readers not well versed with the subject.

With great humility and sense of gratitude towards almighty, We at IGNCA feel blessed that we were given the opportunity to execute the celebrations of 550th Parkash Parv (1469-2019) of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, which started in early 2019. While we were busy planning such celebrations at grand scale, world witnessed unprecedented spread of pandemic and for many months, life came to a standstill around the globe. While it brought many challenges to life at global level, it made us realize that we always need the blessings and teachings of our spiritual masters, if we have to face the challenges posed by forces of nature and system. It made us see the relevance of collective spiritual heritage of mankind in ensuring that we do not forget our creator almighty, and it made us see that mercy for all the living beings is a cherished value. It made us realize the significance of the teachings of great Gurus and Sants that there is no substitute for truthful and honest living.

While beginning contemplation on the socio-economic outlook of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the subject poses a new challenge due to various reasons. First challenge is that everyone is aware of the fact that the Bani of Guru Nanak Dev ji is a spiritual treasure and everyone seeks spiritual guidance from the holy shabad. Why do we want to try to find sociology and economics in such a spiritual scripture? Before we move further, this remains to be discussed.
