Book Description
About the Book

Gunduta Kavya of Nilkantha Shukla has remained a little known or unknown work uptil now. Though more than half a dozen works composed by him have already come to light.

The author was a resident of Bradhnapur (Suryapur) in MP. He was a man of romantic and devotional disposition as becomes evident from his verses. He had studied Sanskrit grammar from the famous Bhattoji Dikshit and was a of Mandana Bhatta in rhetorics. Providence had granted him talent and a natural power to compose beautiful verses and poems. But fortune did not favour him much, so he had to live hand to mouth. He therefore made his own poetic instinct his messenger to convey his request to prince Ramsingh of Amber who was then welknown for his benevolence and helpful attitude towards scholars and poets.

Nilakantha's poems are sweet and with all charm to attract scholars and lovers of poetry. These provide valuable information about the socio-economic, political and geographical conditions of the middle age.

Nilakantha was a perfect devotee of f and Parvati and began his every poetical work by invoking the progenitors of the universe (te: f) with the benediction जयति जयन्तीपतिर्जगति, the spouse of जयन्ती Parvati bails above all. About 1715 V.S. he was reduced to such a miserable state of poverty that he could not afford even to have a proper dress to put on and appear in the princely court. A THE (minister), who was his friend and well-wisher, advised him to approach prince Ram singh, who was the best and highest donor and supporter of the learned in that age. He, therefore, imagined to make his own poetic talent his messenger to convey his request to the prince at Amber. It was for this purpose that he composed the present kavya.
