After completing the work on my first book THE POPULAR UPSURGE & FALL OF CONGRESS, I felt that my contribution was too small since my own knowledge being confined to the politics I could not fully explore all other aspects relating to this great upheaval, the general elections of March 1977 that rooted-out Congress from the entire Indo-Gangetic belt and resultantly brought an end to the 30-years old hegemony of Congress in the Centre.
Soon afterwards, I happened to go through certain articles in Magazines and Newspapers, written by noted scholars covering different aspects of this grand reversal. Some of these seemed to be of immense value and I decided to present such works in the form of a collection so that these are widely read at present and are also preserved for the future. Though a number of books on this subject have flooded the market till now, again this one of mine is a maiden venture, a gem of thoughts.
Here I would like to say a few words about the articles which have been arranged in a mechanical manner. Mr. Nirad C. Chaudhri, noted Indian political thinker (now in London) had in his article, established that the authoritarian trend of Mrs. Indira Gandhi was not entirely of her own but she derived all this from her late father Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, who also ruled in an autocratic but comparatively less shrewd manner. Of course, I do not agree to his contention that Indian people their selves like to be ruled by Dictators and that too as harsh as Indira Gandhi. Actually Indians, as they have openly demonstrated dislike, rather hate the arrogant dictators like Mrs. Gandhi, the greatest victor and looser of the decade. Our people may have a liking for some strong person to rule in the centre so that no one can press him unduly for partisan ends. Mr. S. K. Day, another celebrated political thinker who had good relations with Pandit Nehru's family relates his personal experiences with Mrs. Gandhi-the spoilt child as he calls her. The eminent jurist Mr. Ν. Α. Palkhivala in his open letter to the Prime Minister Mr. Morarji-bhai Desai, has called upon the newly formed Janata Government to see that the long cherished wishes of the Indian people, who have just got rid of the suffocation of twenty dark months, are fulfilled to honour the election pledges and promises of the Janata Party.
The results of March elections have shown a sharp-divide in the mood of the electors of country divifing then in two separate camps-North and South virtually as they are, with some others divided on both the sides. While the North had overwhelmingly voted for Janata and allies, the South had gone whole-heartedly in support of Congress. It shows the people of North and South operating on two quite different wave-lengths but this is not something new. Mr. Gopal Krishna, himself being a South Indian, had confidently gone into the reasons leading to this divide.
Mr. A. N. Grover, Ex-Justice of the Supreme Court of India has suggested alternative ways to get rid of the monestrous 42nd Amendment and has also explained the obstacles coming in way as also the implications arising out of the different steps supposed to be taken to rescind this amsaimzat. It may also be mentioned that Mr. Grover is one of the three Judges of the Supreme Court whom Indira regime superseeded to place Mr. A. N. Ray as Chief Justice and all the three superseeded Judges subsequently resigned in protest, the other two being Mr. Shelot and Mr. Hegde.
