In connection with study of Vedas, three types of Sutras are utilised. These are: 1) Śrauta Sútra. 2) Gruhya Sutra and 3) Dharma Sútra.
In case of Śrauta Sutra theories, one Śrauta Sütra for each Sakha in respect of Gruhya Sutras also. There are separate Gruhya Sutras with reference to the Gruhya Karmas. In third group of Dharmasútras, there are separate Dharma Sutras. According to the traditions of different school of Dharmasútras, there are many Dharmasútras. Only four Dharmasūtras: (1) Gautama (2) Apastamba (3) Väsista (4) Parasara are available.
The theam of the Dharmasútras is to prescribe the hode of conduct at the different stage of life, which has Upanayana, Snána, Viváha, Vanaprastha and Sannyasa. Though all Dharmasutras discribed the hode of conduct in this four stages. There is lightly difference in each case.
For Gruhasthas a number of Vratas are prescribed. Some of this like Chandrayana and Krucchra are very difficult to be practice. A number of Danas, that is Gifts are prescribed to Gruhasthas. On the hole, this cover religious, ethical and ritualistic programmes.
