Book Description
About the Book
Diseases are the manifestations of disturbances in the equilibrium of body constituents including doshas. These are evident in the form of signs and symptoms. Therefore, the correct diagnosis of an ailment demands for a practical awareness of the signs and symptoms. This book is a compilation of classical scientific writings on the signs and symptoms of both health and disease. These are arranged according to the constituents of body and mind. The terms, their meanings, synonyms and the context of usage are given here. The author Dr. E. Surendran has spared no pains in making this volume as comprehensive as possible.

Preface
The concept of ayurveda is universal harmony for which health is the basic requirement. Dhatuvaiṣamya disturbs universal harmony and the restoration of dhätusamya reinstates it. Health is defined as a state wherein the dynamic balance of dosas, dhätus and malas is maintained, the metabolism is at optimum level and soul, mind and sense organs assume sublime position.

Introduction
Perfect knowledge of a disease is attained only by examination. The diagnosis (dia through; gnosis knowledge) of a disease is obtained in two ways i.e. examination of a disease (Rogapariksä) and the diseased person (Rogiparikṣa). The disease may be diagnosed in five ways i.e. by causative factors (nidana), premonitory symptoms (pürvarüpa), distinct symptoms (rupa), confirm diagnosis through medicine (upasaya) and the development of disease (sampräpti). Various factors are involved in the diagnosis of a disease. It may depend on site of the body (Añgapratyanga parikṣā), essence in the body (Saraparikṣā), excretion from the body (Malaparikṣa) and so on. Symptoms play a vital role in the process of diagnosis.
