Hinduism which originated in this land as Sanatana Dharma nearly 4000 years ago in the Vedic period has always been a comprehensive socio-religious culture of the people. Its followers worship God in any of His many forms and names. Its emphasis has been on performance of duties according to one’s station in life and natural endowments hereby promoting peace and harmony among the people and their prosperity. Its sacred texts which have come down from ancient times are still being taught to Brahmin youth and recited during temple rituals and religious ceremonies. These enduring features of Hinduism are discussed in sixteen concise narratives in this book.
Hinduism is the most ancient religion of the world, its origin going as far back as 4000 BC when the Vedas were compiled. From the beginning it was Sanantan Dharma that was regulating not only religious life but also the duties and conduct of the individuals as well as the rulers. Thus besides beliefs in God, Dharma was accorded the highest place. The other characteristics of Hinduism are freedom to worship God in many names and forms, and tolerant attitude towards other’s beliefs. In this respect it has always been different from the monolithic religions of later origin which attribute exclusive authenticity to a single Messenger of God and a single Holy Book. The liberalism of Hinduism has given it strength and vitality to maintain its hold on the minds of the people through the ages.
This book is intended to acquaint the younger generation with theses unique aspects of Hinduism, and may also be of interest to general readers who desire to learn more about their religion.
