Narinder Nath (born 1932), received his Masters Degree in Maths and Statistics from Punjab University, underwent training in designing of optical systems under the guidance of a German Expert for four years in ordnance factory, Dehradun, switched on to the Central Secretariat Service, worked as a Controller Imports and Exports, Export Promotion Officer (Books), Under Secretary (Book promotion) Deputy Secretary (Adult Education), as Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Law and Justice, and Executive Director, ELP. Trained in copyright under a fellowship offered by World Intellectual Property Organisation, Geneva in copyright offices in Washington, London, Paris and Geneva and in Computer Science from Siepe-optimation, Rome. Received training for a short period in Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. Represented Ministry of Education in International Book Fairs held at Frankfurt, London, Moscow, Singapore, Cairo, Hongkong, Sofia and did a marke study of Indian books in Indonesia, Malyasia, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Beirut. Author of many papers on Export promotion, and book publishing. Assisted The Federation of Indian Publishers in the successful organisation of 20" Congress of International Publishers Association in 1992 attended by 800 publishers from 43 countries. Served as a Liaison Officer for Delegations of Authors from China, Russia and Bangladesh under the cultural exchange programes.

He is an active member of Arya Samaj and a follower of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. He is an ardent lover of books, had been with the books and for the books.

Max Muller states that reason and comparative study of religion declare that God gave His knowledge to mankind from His first appearance on the earth.

At present there is an imperative need to restore a sense of balance and profundity in a world attuned to immediate material success at all costs, torn and alienated as it is from the great heritage of ancient wisdom, and fragmented in its vision and interest due to narrow focus on professional excellence and consumer oriented lifestyle. To remedy the situation, besides other measures like good governance, changes in the judicial system, and election procedures we need to develop the conscience ofthe individuals, by laying more emphasis on the value based education, promotion of enlightenment through the study of religion and teachings of our saints and sages. This will make us understand the meaning, purpose and goal of human life and awaken our consciousness.

Here I would like to express my thanks to Ramakrishna Math Hyderabad for permiting me to take some extracts from their book "SAINT DARSHAN" a treatise on teachings of saints and sages.

Innumerable books on religion and philosophy are there but unfortunately today's lifestyle and cut-throat competition do not permit an individual any time to read lengthy texts. I had the opportunity to visit several countries and on the basis of my discussions with several people, I felt there is a need to bring out quintessence of our ancient wisdom lying hidden in the Vedas, Upanishads, Manu-smriti, Bhagavatam and Bhagvad Gita which could give a broad idea to the common reader who is short of time. I have, therefore, made an attempt to bring out the salient features contained in these voluminous documents in a few pages as to give a brief idea about the richness of our scriptures. The teachings of these scriptures are secular and not confined to any particular creed. They are universal and equally applicable to all people at all times. They contain eternal spiritual truths and are embodiment of divine knowledge. The chapters on panorama of life, way to eternal happiness, sages and guiding souls will be of special interest. I hope this brief account will enlighten the readers and awake an interest in them to go for detailed reading. Any response from the readers by way of comments will be greatly appreciated by me.
