Ganesh, also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, Puliyar and Binayak is one the most worshipped deities in the Hindu patheon. Although he is known by many attributes, Ganesh's elephant head image is highly popular and makes him easy to be identified. There are various stories behind his origin. But the most prominent ones involve Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati as his parents.
Ganesh is widely recognized as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts, sciences, intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is worshipped at the start of every rite and holy ceremony.
Ganesh is also revered as a patron of letters and learning during writing sessions. Several texts associated with his birth explains his distinct iconography.
