The present book 'Gandhi and 21st Century is collection of selected articles presented during the U.G.C. sponsored National Seminar held on the eve of Gandhi's 125th Birth Anniversary Celebrations. Relevance of Gandhi has been discussed on many ways. In the present book, authors from various fields of academic disciplines have discussed the Relevance of Gandhi in the 21 stCentury.
Unlike Marx, Gandhi would not feel enthused even by the concept of appropriate technology because the urgent problem was to reduce rural unemployment which will be the aim of the 21st century.
21st century will be more concerned with environmental challenges of global level wars. In the first-half of the 20th century, Gandhi had led stress on environmental pollution.
Gandhian ideals of Truth, Non- violence, equality of human beings, universal brotherhood, decentralized democracy, socialism and secularism would act as beacon lights for the humanity as a whole in the 21st century.
Gandhi was probably the most important philosopher whose precepts could guide the crisis ridden world of the 21st century.
Thus the present book too focuses the relevance of Gandhian Thought in the 21st century also and hence the importance of this book has increased tremendously.
"Gandhi and 21st Century" is a book containing 29 selected articles out of 44 submitted during the National Seminar sponsored and funded by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
During 125th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, it was envisaged that Gandhi was born in 19th Century, worked in the 20th Century and his ideas would remain relevant and practical in the 21st century as well. This book is relevant not only for the remaining part of the 20th century, but will be a bacon light in the 21st century as well.
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Macdoseus as well as 82 Noble laureautes have unequivocally taken a stand that the future of humanity lies only in Gandhi. Gandhi will stand to the test of time in the 21st century and the global programme of eradication of unemployment, poverty, communal tension, diseases, etc. will be well attended to by the Gandhian Thought in the 21st century.
The essence of Indian Philosophical tradition, which was inherited by Gandhi and practised for the hole of his life, may be stated briefly in terms of doctrine of the Purusharthas and the goals are dharma, artha, karma and moksha. Gandhi's ideas were still very much relevant in metaphysical, social, political, economic and ecological spheres. Collected works of Gandhi are spread over oversized 100 volumes which is probably the biggest ever printed collected work on any individual. Gandhism, being the wisdom of sages accumulated over thousands of years, practised and lived by Gandhi, promises to transcend the time barrier provided proper adjustments are made in consonance with the requirements of times.
Gandhi was a philosopher on one hand, a karmayogi on the other. He preached non-violence on the one hand but was not ready to condone cowardice and accepted necessary violence on grounds of comparison on the other. He was conservative on many occasions, a revolutionary on others. The main question, therefore, was to indicate and point out which Gandhi's relevance we are trying to find out. Without ethics, politics was an evil and if we want peace in the world, we should have to restore ethics in politics, which was advocated by Gandhi Growing atomic weapons, abject poverty, unemployment and consumerist culture required Gandhian remedies because other remedies had already proved ineffective.
