The human nervous system is the most complex and versatile achievement of the process of evolution. The nervous system of all animal functions is to detect changes in the external and internal environment and to bring about appropriate responses in muscles, organs and glands. With ascent of the evolutionary scale there is, in addition, an increasing capacity for so called 'higher functions' of the nervous system such as cognition, learning, memory and ultimately self awareness, consciousness, intellect and personality. All these aspects of cognitive abilities have been ascribed to the functioning of Manovaha srotas and Sangyavaha srotas in Ayurveda. The anatomical, physiological, biochemical and molecular bases of some aspects of neural function are fairly well understood in the present era. The indepth understanding of Manovaha srotas and Sangyavaha srotas is required for better interpretation of some vital brain functions which still seeks attention.
