About the Author

A keen observer of nature, she was interested in gardening since childhood. In fulfilling her desire to become a doctor and serve the community she had to sacrifice her passion of study of botany. Preface

Human beings have co-existed with nature and forests have always played crucial role in the survival of humans Plants had been an integral part of humanity since time immemorial. The bondage is strong and inseparable We come across plants everywhere including hills, deserts and forests. All living creatures including birds and animals are in someway dependent on them. Growth of civilization is dependent on trees Starting from paper making and preparation of medicine to ship building we are dependent on materials provided by trees. In early civilization trees provided us basic food items in the form of fruits, seeds and edible part of some roots. It was also responsible for giving us shelter protecting us from sun, rain and strong winds. Its wood was used as fuel for cooking and giving warmth in cold weather. Many tools and weapons were made of wood. Growth of civilization brought sophistication and now the trees were planted to get excellent wood for making durable and delicate furniture and other luxury items. In ancient times a log of wood was used as bed. Modern times have seen beautifully carved beds made of fine wood. Modernisation has seen the manufacture of fine paper and cosmetics acquired from tree parts. Trees have definite role to play in maintaining ecological balance and have tremendous aesthetic and economic values This book will give appropriate information regarding all these aspects Parts of all trees are clearly defined which will enable the reader to identify them. They will also be able to understand the day to day value of the particular tree Liberal use of illustrative photographs in this book will help in easy identification of various plants As the title indicates the reader's attention is drawn towards. the fruits, which is an essential part of most of the trees.
