INTRODUCTION

Being the fifth largest state in India in area-wise, Andhra Pradesh has got fairly large number of wetlands ranging from small seasonal impoundments to large sized perennial lakes. These wetlands include the long stretches of riverine systems like Godavari, Krishna, Thungabadhra, Pennar and lakes to name a few like Kolleru, Kondakarla. Pocharam of perennial nature. These freshwater ecosystems supporting large number of faunal elements including plankton, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, sponges, aquatic insects and large number of other invertebrate groups.

Extensive noteworthy studies have been made on various aspects viz. limnological, faunal, floral and pollution on freshwater ecosystems of India. In recent years, the faunal and limnological studies on the freshwater ecosystems like lakes, reservoirs and rivers of Andhra Pradesh by Zafar (1966). Venkateswarlu (1969), Munawar (1970). Seenayya (1971, 1972), Venu (1981). Ratna Rao (1985), Jaya Devi (1985). Malathi et al.(2002). Siddiqi and Khan (2002). Patil and Panda (2003). Anitha et al (2005) and Chandrasekhar et al (2007) are worth mentioning.

Dhanapathi (2000), Dhanapathi and Rama Sarma (2000), Chandra Mohan and Rao (1976). Siddiqi and Chandrasekhar (1995), Chandrasekhar and Siddiqi (2005) and Chandrasekhar (2007 and 2010) studied on the rotifer fauna of Andhra Pradesh.

Taxonomic studies on Cladocera made by Durga Prasad (1982) on Kolleru Lake, Rao et. al. (1998) on two freshwater bodies of North Andhra, Chandrasekhar (2002) on the lakes of Hyderabad, Chandrasekhar and Siddiqi (2005) on Kondakarla lake.. Chandrasekhar (2010) on Pocharam Lake and Chandrasekhar (2010) on Wyra lake. Tonapi (1959), Roy (1988). Bal and Basu (1994), Ghosh (1996), Bhattacharya (2000). Ramakrishna (2000). Mukhopadhyaya (2007). Mukhopadhyaya and Ghosh (2007). Deepa and Rao (2010) and Deepa (2010, 2012 and2013) made some studies on aquatic insects of freshwater bodies of Andhra Pradesh.
