Book Description

About the Book

India’s diversity applies as much to food as it does to its cultures and beliefs. Fasting is one such ritual that comes with its customized dos and don’ts. For most people, fasting means just one thing: abstaining from food. But this self-denial, usually, is done to extremes. If you are food enthusiast, fasting can mean feasting later. If it is not, it could be harmful if done wrong. So what is the right way to fast? What does fasting mean and why do we do it? Get tips on how to fast and how not to, from Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

About the Author

Today with a presence in over 156 countries, The Art of Living is one of the largest volunteer-based organisations in the world.

Preface

Fasting or detox is a tradition that is still being followed by almost all the major religious around the world. Cultures have universally followed this tradition of staying away from food, either for God or in the belief that it is an ideal route towards spiritual upliftment. At times, we create our own fasting modules, while at other times, we indulge in feast post the fast. But do we actually know the reason why we fast?

While it is true that a willing abstinence from food does help in going deeper in meditation, but not many known that fasting is a way to detox the system, physically, emotionally and mentally. In other words, fasting helps the body to go on a holiday from its daily routine of ingestion, secretion, digestion, absorption and excretion.

In this book Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar advises us on what not to wolf down and what we should be allowing ourselves to eat or drink during fasting. It talks about fasting and its connection with various festivals. The book discusses food from an Ayurvedic perspective.
