The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History of the M. S. University of Baroda carries out systematic studies of the material culture of India by exploring and excavating important archaeological sites. It publishes its findings in the M. S. University Archaeological Series. The present report is based on the excavation conducted by the department at Nageswar in December 1984.The present report deals mainly with the Harappan shell industry. It opens up new vistas in understanding the sequential stages of shell bangle and ladle manufacutre, from the study of shell manufacturing waste. It has also been demonstrated that the urban centres of Harappan period depend greatly on the outlying resource areas and Nageswar was one of the important sites developed because of its proximity to the sea, for the exploitation of marine gastropods. I am confident that this report would be a useful contribution for the scholars interested in the Harappan studies, as well as to the students of Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology.
