Foreword In electoral politics the role of ethnicity seems obvious. In the present study an attempt has been made to understand the extent of the impact of ethnicity in election of representatives for assembly constituencies. During the 1991 assembly election six constituencies in tribal dominated areas of the country had been chosen for a survey. Researchers having earlier exposure of conducting field work in these areas were deputed for this work. These six areas are in the following states: Meghalaya, Orissa, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Besides the study of these six constituencies at the time of 1991 assembly election, a constituency in the state of Sikkim was studied after the election was over.
