Well-known theory of 'The Fittest Survives’ applies to the academic and professional career of individuals also. With rampant population growth and limited opportunities the survival in professional career became fiercely competitive and tough.
In a vast developing country like ours admission to professional courses and settling in good employment are the two major problems. Any government can provide basic education to the people but professional courses are limited to a few, who are capable and intelligent enough to pursue them. However, as everyone aspires to join the best institutions consequently there would be a very tough competition.
This is true in case of Ayurveda professionals too. More and more Ayurvedic graduates go for post graduation to equip themselves with better qualification. But availability of limited seats demands intelligence as well as skill. Getting admission in a reputed and national institute puts further pressure on the candidates.
The trend of adopting entrance test with +1/-1 mark system (much familiar with IITs) is fast catching up in Ayurveda institutes also. Candidates cannot afford to miss even a single question. However, after graduation reading again all the texts in detail (keeping the purpose of achieving the goal set) may be cumbersome as the candidates feel that they know everything. But minor and tricky differences in the options given for the questions would definitely make major difference as far as the candidate's career is concerned.
Hence, there is indeed a need for such a guide with the help of which one can easily set him/herself for the competition. Here 1s a book first of its kind where important topics of all subjects of graduate course in Ayurveda are covered in brief followed by a quiz of multiple choice questions to test their memory. Additionally information considered important for Entrance Examinations on different allied subjects - Anatomy, Obstetrics and Paediatrics was also provided. The principal author of this guide Dr. P. Nagaraju, is a diligent and studious alumnus of Ayurveda college at Tirupati, where I was a faculty member for over 16 years. Dr. Nagaraju and Dr. S. Sumana, both postagraduates in Ayurveda have also compiled in the book the question papers of competitive examinations of different years held in various Ayurvedic institutions like Banaras Hindu University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, National Institute of Ayurveda, Govt. Ayurveda Colleges, Hyderabad and Trivendrum and organizations like UPSC and ESIC to make the readers appreciate the pattern of questions in Entrance Tests at these institutions. They further made efforts to frame 15 sets of each 200 multiple choice questions covering all important aspects of subjects of Ayurveda.
This book, I am sure, will be highly useful to students and researchers seeking higher education in Ayurveda and equally the unemployed for going for suitable better jobs.
I congratulate Dr. Nagaraju and Dr. Sumana for this first venture and wish that they would bring in series of such books for the benefit of those, who set goals and make efforts for their future.
Ayurveda is divine and eternal science, that created by Lord Brahma for the help of ailing mankind. It is a 'Veda' (source of knowledge) leading with 'Ayu’, i.e. a combination of Sattva, Atma and Sharira. It is concerned with the prevention and cute of diseases in all the three Kalas (Bhuta, Bhavishyat and Vattamaana kala) as it has been propagated by Apta. It is a complete science, where the principles do not change at any time. It is only a mistake in interpretation of principles that Ayurveda lacks several things. Haritaki was having the effect of virechana at the time of Agnivesha and is even now has the same effect after passing through several thousands of years. That is why Charaka called this 'Shashvata'.
In 1960 it was decided in New York at a workshop on medical education to adopt for multiple choice questions in place of age-old system of evaluating a student's knowledge and proficiency through stereotyped question paper. Objective assessment is of considerable value in testing a candidate's understanding of the subject. It is greatly helpful in covering much of a particular subject in a relatively short time.
Nowadays most of the colleges conducting P.G. courses in Ayurveda, are admitting students after conducting screening test and in most cases the test in of objective type. Unlike the admission tests conducted by various P.G. centres, the entrance test for admission into MD (Ay)/MS (Ay) conducted by Banaras Hindu University, contains considerable number of questions from different subjects of modern system of medicine. It is not an easy thing for the candidates to prepare completely, after covering ocean like Ayurveda system and modern system of medicine. Keeping this difficulty in view, the present book is prepared covering all the important topics of Ayurvedic and Modern medicine, so that there is a little chance that an aspiring candidate/reader misses them.
The methodology of examination in medical sciences, as also in order fields of study, is undergoing a revolutionary change. The subjective assessment through essay type of questions is slowly giving way to objective assessment through multiple choice questions. The result of the candidate no longer depends upon the knowledge about half a dozen questions, attitude and whim of the examiner and the candidate's ability to expand the answers. In the examinations with the changed system a candidate has just to choose "correct" and "incorrect" "more appropriate" and "less appropriate" options.
Keeping in view the deviations in descriptions contained in text books, compiling a set of model question papers 1s not an easy task. In the present book comprising model questions, attempt has been made to keep away from controversial points. Every question incorporates the mistakes commonly committed by candidates.
It is sincerely felt that this book will be of considerable value in preparing the students for various competitive examinations and also to have self assessment of the knowledge gained from the books. This book consists of general study of all the subjects of Ayurvedic syllabus and also important topics from modern subjects. In Ayurvedic subjects, there are some multiple choice questions given just after each topic to recollect the important points to test memory, hence the name "Test Your Memory'.
We have given 15 model question papers, each containing 200 questions. In this we have covered all Ayurvedic subjects and also modern. We have also given question papers of previous competitive examinations separately. There are some important shlokas which are useful not only for entrance examinations but also for the permanent remembrance, by the reader.
There may be some mistakes in this book, which may be understood in a positive manner by the readers. We invite suggestion from readers for further improvement.
We ate very much thankful to M/S Chaukhamba Sanskrit Pratishthan, Delhi for encouraging attitude regarding the publication of this book.
